Susan Rich is the author of four collections of poetry, including Cloud Pharmacy, The Alchemist’s Kitchen, Cures Include Travel and the Cartographer’s Tongue / Poems of the World all from White Pine Press. She is a co-editor, along with Ilya Kaminsky and Brian Turner, of The Strangest of Theatres: Poets Writing Across Borders and has received awards from 4Culture, PEN USA, The Times Literary Supplement (London), Peace Corps Writers, the Fulbright Foundation, and Washington State Book Awards. Rich’s individual poems have appeared in journals such as the Academy of American Poetry Poem-A-Day,Antioch Review, Harvard Review, Gettysburg Review, New England Review, O Magazine, Women’s Review of Books and Poetry Ireland.
She has worked as a staff person for Amnesty International, an electoral supervisor in Bosnia Herzegovina, and a human rights trainer in Gaza and the West Bank. Rich lived in the Republic of Niger, West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, later moving to South Africa to teach at the University of Cape Town on a Fulbright Fellowship. She has given poetry readings and taught her work in Bosnia Herzegovina, Ireland, and South Africa. Several of her poems and essays have been translated into Slovenian and Swedish, then published. Along with Kelli Russell Agodon, she directs Poets on the Coast: A Weekend Writing Retreat for Women.
