Join us for a lively Zoom conversation about Wendell Berry’s landmark book, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, the evening Thursday, October 24th .
Counter Point Press writes, “Since its publication in 1977, The Unsettling of America has been recognized as a classic of American letters. In it, Wendell Berry argues that good farming is a cultural and spiritual discipline. Today’s agribusiness, however, takes farming out of its cultural context and away from families. As a result, we as a nation are more estranged from the land—from the intimate knowledge, love, and care of it.”
With a focus on all scales of agriculture, we will look at this primary text for inspiration and conversation and ideas for future directions for farming in our state. Open to all eaters, farmers, readers, and those interested in our food system.
Some discussion questions to consider beforehand:
- What still feels true and relevant to you about The Unsettling of America?
- What do you think about Berry’s description of producers vs consumers?
- What is your favorite quote or passage from the book?
- What does The Unsettling of America teach us about the current state of agriculture?
The event will be hosted by Jessica Gigot, Harmony Fields Farm, and Mark Musick, Tilth Alliance Board member.
This is meant to be a non-academic, community discussion. Jessica and Mark will moderate the conversation to make sure all voices are heard. Come with comments and questions. The book is available through most library systems.
Wendell Berry wrote the first words of The Unsettling of America for a speech at Gonzaga University July 1, 1974. A video of his speech is available HERE.
