This is a quick, love note to say that we are taking another year off from cheesemaking. Over the past year, we have been updating our facilities and tending to some important family things. I have also been doing a lot of writing–more about that soon!
However, I want to say that it’s a very scary time to be a livestock owner. Globally, we do not understand bird flu and its effects on people or milk supplies. We need to wait and see what happens. National leadership on food safety has also taken a dramatic, if not dangerous, turn and it does not feel safe right now to run our farm commercially. Nationally, this is an all-hands-on-deck moment.
These are just a few of the headlines (yesterday) that stopped me in my tracks:
I still believe we can have a better, more localized food system. I believe in the quality of our products. I believe that cheesemaking, caring for animals, and regenerating the soil is important work. If not, the most important work. However, I am not overreacting when I say this political moment is a real threat to our way of life and our democracy. Everyone’s participation is needed. Even if you didn’t vote in the last election, you need to engage now.
We will still nurture our flock this year and grow food on our farm with the hope of getting back to our seasonal routine in 2026. This year, our farm stand won’t be open for business, but we are still doing online meat and wool sales.
Thank you for understanding and thank you for all of your support over the years.
You believe in us and we believe in you!
